What began as a typical Wednesday morning abruptly changed when I opened my computer to find that while I had been sleeping, seven Amazon emails crept into my inbox, each announcing a refund for an item I had purchased. To be clear, I had not requested any refunds. Amazon was issuing gift cards to my account for items I had ordered and received. Very strange, I thought. What in the world?
A subsequent email from Amazon disclosed that “per my request”—nah uh, I was sleeping—both the email address and phone number on my account had been changed. I knew right then I’d been hacked.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that with my account security breached, my protected information was now compromised. I had no way to access my account. I was also cut off from my decades-long account history, my ability to order merchandise, and from all other Amazon services, including Audible, Prime Video and Prime Music.
Without an account, my phone calls to Amazon were exhausting as I navigated through their automated channels, multiple disconnections and actual human beings telling me there was nothing they could do. It would take six days of endless hours on the phone, countless representatives, and stress levels that would rival the height of Mount Everest before my account would finally be re-established.
In our ever-evolving technological world, our security is not guaranteed. That’s why when we read the emphatic words in Romans that absolutely nothing can ever separate us from God’s love, we can breathe an enormous sigh of relief. We can know with confidence that our relationship with God through Jesus is completely secure. It can never be hacked. We can never be separated, never shut out from God. God’s love for us is vaulted within His uncompromising, unfailing Word.
Take that, Amazon, hackers.
