My Sleeping Bag

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.

I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. - Psalm 77:11-12

I am the owner of a sacred sleeping bag. I know that sounds strange but it didn't start out that way. It was just an ordinary sleeping bag that I carried with me when I would visit one of my daughters and stay overnight at their place. I could easily throw it down on their sofa and have an instant bed that didn't create an inconvenience in their home.

Years ago, on one particular trip, I found myself coming down with a respiratory infection—the kind that sends you into extreme fatigue, headache, and chills. Climbing into my sleeping bag that night was a huge relief. It was the respite I needed to begin caring for my emerging virus. I snuggled deeply beneath the down-filled fabric and began to pray for healing, all the while giving thanks for the comfort of this place to rest. As I prayed, I knew God was closely with me. I began to envision myself not only cozied in my sleeping bag, but enveloped in God's tender care, as if I was laying in His very hands. I experienced a warmth and peace beyond description. It was then that my humble sleeping bag became sacred, even consecrated. Because, to this day, every time I use it, it reminds me of the Father’s gracious love for me.

In the Old Testament, God's people were encouraged to set up stone markers as a reminder of God's faithfulness to them. We are in need of reminders as well, so we don’t forget how deeply God loves and cares for us. That’s what my somewhat worn sleeping bag is for me. It never fails to evoke the truth about God’s presence in my life.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

What physical elements or objects do you have in your space that remind you of God’s faithfulness and love? It might be as conventional as a framed Bible verse or as unusual as your kitchen toaster. Allowing the things in our lives to trigger our spiritual awareness gives way to growth in our faith and gratitude in our hearts.
