Paddle or Drift

This is why it is so crucial that we be all the more engaged and attentive to the truths that we have heard so that we do not drift off course. - Hebrews 2:1

If you’ve spent any time on a lake or a river in a canoe or kayak or other flotation device, you know that if you’re not actively paddling toward a destination, you will quickly find yourself drifting in the direction of the prevailing current. This can be an easy and relaxing way to glide down a river on a peaceful afternoon. Just make sure you’re okay going with the flow because you will certainly end up wherever the water takes you.

In the same way the Bible tells us that if we’re not intentionally moving toward Jesus and the truth revealed to us in God’s Word, just like the drifting boat, we’ll be pulled away by the influences around us. Shifting cultural ideas, peer pressure, popular opinions, even our own selfish ambitions can act like a riptide current, tugging us away from our beliefs.

Our faith remains anchored to the truth as we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, connect with Him in prayer and worship, and put that truth into practice in our daily lives.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, You know the personal and cultural pressures around us that would pull us away from the truth. We ask that You would help us to be aware and discerning of those influences so we do not drift off course. Keep us moving closer to You in every aspect of our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
