Planting for a Harvest

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. - Galatians 6:7

Secondhand Lions is a 2003 movie about an introverted young boy whose mother sends him to live with his two eccentric great uncles on a farm in Texas. This comedy-drama has a lot to say about character, wisdom and virtue. But one humorous segment often comes to mind.

The two uncles—Hub and Garth—decide to plant a vegetable garden after buying seeds from a traveling salesman. They believe they are planting a variety of vegetables, including peas, beans, squash, tomatoes, beets and cabbage. After painstakingly tilling the ground, they plant their purchased seeds and wait for things to grow. However, the joke’s on them, as all the seed packets actually contained a singular kind of seed. Much to the uncles’ disappointment, their entire garden yielded nothing but corn!

Therein lies the reality of gardening and a principle true in life as well—we harvest what we have planted. Our actions and attitudes will, in time, produce a resulting “fruit.” Sowing seeds that align with God’s Word and teaching strengthens our walk with Him and opens the door to His abundant blessings. But sowing seeds to the contrary separates us from God’s best in our lives. Plant seeds of kindness and reap a harvest of friends. Plant seeds that are hurtful and reap loneliness. Don’t expect to get sweet potatoes where you’ve planted onions! What will your harvest be?

CLOSING PRAYER

Father in heaven, please give me a fresh perspective on what I’m sowing into my life each day. Help me to generously sow seeds that bless those around me and bring you glory and honor! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
