The Path to Follow

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. - Proverbs 3:5,6

If you’ve ever watched a Hallmark movie you know with confidence that the storyline will be wholesome, the characters sweet—if not dripping with honey—and the ending predictably happy. And somewhere in the script you’re likely to encounter a scene that contains the line, “just follow your heart”—because apparently that’s the best advice to give when facing life’s biggest decisions!

Don’t get me wrong, I love heartfelt movies and I believe our hearts can hold an abundance of good. But our feelings, emotions and good intentions are not enough to rely on when it comes to making important choices.

Thankfully, as followers of Jesus, we’ve been given the necessary resources to make wise decisions. We can ask God in prayer for His guidance.  And when we begin to sense His direction, we ask ourselves a few simple questions to make sure it’s coming from God—is it consistent with God’s Word and His character? Does it require my dependence on God? Is this direction pleasing to Him? These things affirmed, we can move forward with confidence following God’s leading.

So go ahead and follow your heart when selecting which Hallmark movie to watch or choosing what flavor ice cream to indulge in. But for issues that truly matter, knit your heart to God and follow where He leads.

CLOSING PRAYER

God, keep my heart aligned with You and remind me to always seek Your guidance in all my decision-making, knowing that Your plans are always in my best interest.
