The Power of an Ordinary Life

God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise… so that no one may boast before him. - 1 Corinthians 1:27–29

We live in a culture that celebrates the billionaires, the rock stars, the Oscar winners, the Super Bowl players and the TikTok phenomenons. We idolize them for their front-page headlines, their political platforms, their staggering salaries, their social media followers and their seemingly endless ability to influence and shape the masses.

But throughout the Bible we read that, rather than choosing the rich and famous or strong and mighty to do His work, God chose the unlikely, the overlooked, the unknown. David was the youngest shepherd, Moses was a self-doubting speaker and the disciples were common laborers and fishermen.

When God resides in the human heart, those people become the real world-changers. They are the ones who get up every morning and go to work to provide for their families. They are the uncompromising who refuse to sacrifice their integrity for the job promotion. The ones who put others first and serve with selfless abandon. The impoverished who share. The ones who lead with love. The generous, the thoughtful, the encouragers. The ones who would gladly trade mountains of wealth and present day notoriety for a singular sentence spoken by their Savior, "Well done my good and faithful servant.” These are the real heroes of our time, carrying out their extraordinary missions in the most ordinary places.

You don’t have to look far. They may be a janitor, a nursing home aide or a diaper-changing mom. They might be the one writing you a speeding ticket, giving you change at the drive-through window, sitting next to you on the bus or sleeping under your own roof. This person might even be you.

When God empowers an ordinary life, extraordinary stories are written, genuine differences are made and lasting legacies are created.
