Look at the birds of the air…consider the lilies of the field… - Matthew 6:26-29
On vacation recently, while enjoying a carefree schedule, I caught myself staring at the movement of clouds and it felt such a luxury to do so. I could not remember the last time clouds held my attention for more than a brief glance, let alone being mesmerized by their moving formations across the horizon. Later on, my attention was caught once again by the casual swaying of prairie grass and I felt the same odd enjoyment, marveling at its graceful dance in the breeze and God’s exquisite creation.
Back home, in my normal routine, however, I can rarely afford such time, feeling the constant pull toward more “pressing” and “productive” endeavors. And yet, Scripture points us again and again to the small and ordinary things that hold a treasure trove of insight into our loving God. A mustard seed reveals the tangible nature of a believer’s faith. Two widow’s coins illustrate complete trust in God. The lilies of the fields and birds of the air teach us about God’s faithfulness and provision toward us. Even a lowly manger in Bethlehem reveals God’s identification with the poor and the marginalized.
Seemingly insignificant things can have great spiritual importance if we’re willing to open our eyes to see them. Such things remind us that God frequently reveals His power and purposes through humble, ordinary circumstances. That understanding can lead us into deeper spiritual growth and worship. But we have to slow our pace and pay attention to gain this insight. We have to create intentional time to be still. We have to look closely at what’s happening around us, perhaps even asking, “God, what are you up to here?” Maybe then, when we’ve turned down the volume of our noisy agendas we will hear the quiet whispers of God speaking through the small and ordinary.
CLOSING PRAYER
Father God, I want to see past the clamor of my busy world and learn more about you, even through the small and ordinary things around me. Help me to secure times of quiet meditation in Your presence with a heart ready to receive Your voice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
