The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. - Psalms 19:1
It was summertime when four of our grandchildren came to stay at our house. They loved my idea when I suggested we forego usual bedtimes and stay up late to do some stargazing.
The night sky was clear, so as darkness fell we climbed our rocky backyard hill with blankets in tow. When we reached the top, we laid down on our deck, all nestled in a row—eyes wide with wonder toward the black expanse above us. One by one the stars began to appear. The darker the sky became, the brighter they shone.
There was a good deal of chatter between us. “Is that a planet?” “Hey, there’s the big dipper.” “I just saw a shooting star!” And an occasional airplane pulsed across our vision.
We were captivated by this display of God’s handiwork—and we knew we were seeing just a fraction of it. We talked about how big the universe must be.
I’ve enjoyed viewing stars many times in my life and have laid on lots of picnic tables in National Parks to do so. But sharing my grandchildren’s first stargazing experience is something I will always treasure. It was like pulling back a curtain to reveal another aspect of God, the great Creator. I hope it’s something they’ll never forget as well.
