For as he thinks within himself, so is he. - Proverbs 23:7
Human beings process countless thoughts each day in a stream of consciousness generated from past experiences, emotions, environment, or what’s grabbing our attention at any given moment. It’s like standing chest-deep in a river that never stops flowing. Every second, new thoughts rush past—a memory, an idea, a song, a conversation. Some thoughts drift by like leaves, barely noticed, while others crash into us like logs, demanding our focus.
Most of us navigate this ocean of thoughts without much consideration as to where it’s coming from, whether or not it’s beneficial to us, or even how true our thoughts really are. But, what we think about matters. Over time, our thoughts begin to shape the people we become. That’s why the Bible tells us to fix our minds on things that are authentic, real, honorable, beautiful and kind (Philippians 4:8). In doing so, we impact our character and begin to incorporate those qualities into our lives. If we learn to discern our flow of thoughts, every untrue, disrespectful, negative or unkind notion can be immediately discarded and we can stand in clear waters that flow with encouragement and help us become more like Jesus.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS
Take some time to monitor your stream of thoughts in the next few days. Consider what you’re thinking about! Don’t be surprised if there are a few logs that needs to be dragged from your river! Ask God to help your mind flow with life-giving thoughts that draw you closer to Him.
