I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. - Psalm 121:1-2
I like to think of myself as a mountain girl. Though born and raised in the midwest, the mountains have been my deep-breath, soul-stirring place since I was young. There’s something about looking at mountain grandeur that puts my lowliness and God’s greatness into crystal clear perspective.
You cannot view a mountain without immediately feeling small and at the same time recognizing the majesty of its creator. That’s why the Psalmist writes that in times of trouble we must lift our eyes to the mountains. Because, in doing so, we are looking to the sovereign Creator Himself to provide the help we need. We lift our eyes off of our issues and our own attempts to solve them and we fix our gaze on the only One who is completely worthy of our trust and who truly has the power to meet our needs.
We can choose to flounder in the whirlpool of our problems or we can lift our eyes and our hearts to the Lord whose steady hands hold all of creation. We have a God who is ready to help us when we call on Him. Whatever the challenge—no matter the size or severity—look up and find the help you need.
CLOSING PRAYER
Father God, Maker of heaven and earth, thank you for being my help in times of trouble…my source of strength and encouragement. Help me to always lift my eyes from my challenges to my Champion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
