Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints, to those who turn to him in their hearts. - Psalms 85:8
How noisy is your world? If it’s anything like mine, between constant marketers, endless notifications, and a calendar bursting with busyness, I often wish I could turn down the volume. For most of us, quiet moments in our day are hard to come by. And yet, they’re essential to hear God’s voice.
If we’ve cultivated a relationship with God through honest conversations in prayer and we read His Word regularly to gain an understanding of His heart and teachings, we then have a solid foundation to hear His voice. But, in order to hear, we have to learn to listen. And that means being still enough—without distractions—and attentive enough to the subtle ways Jesus may choose to speak to us. This may come through scripture, prayer, or thoughts He brings to mind.
Getting comfortable with moments of silence during our prayers takes time and patience. And developing ears attune to His voice takes practice. But, in doing these things, we become better listeners in the most important listening of our lives. We learn to recognize our Savior’s voice and open opportunities to hear as He speaks into our lives and deepens our intimacy with Him.
CLOSING PRAYER
Thank You, Jesus, for desiring to speak to me. I want to recognize Your voice with confidence. Give me patience to be still in quiet times and the ability to know when You are speaking—I want to hear what You have to say to me.
