What's On Your "To-Do" List?

Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others. - Colossians 3:23

Today my agenda is a laundry basket brimming with the mundane: bills to pay, emails to return, dishes to wash, and phone calls to make. Your day may be similar or have very different tasks. But truth is, whether you’re going to a job, school or working at home, most of us have routine activities on a daily basis that we tend to view as ordinary and humdrum. It’s what makes the wheels of life continue to turn but can often feel boring and unimportant. After all, it’s hard to believe you’re making a difference in the world by scrubbing your bathroom toilet!

God, however, is far less concerned with the greatness of work we’re doing and for more interested in the attitude with which we’re doing it. Taking care of our homes, working diligently in the office or classroom, even in the small activities, can be acts of faith and worship with God at the center of it. When we invite God into our daily routines, focussing on His presence with us, even a stroll down the grocery aisle can be as meaningful as time on our knees. We can begin to shift our mindset about some of the ordinary things we do, like folding laundry, cooking meals, even brushing our teeth, and start seeing them as so much more. Doing our tasks out of pure love for our Lord and practicing an awareness that He is with us in the process is key to turning our routines into reverence, our drab into devotions and our humdrums into hallelujahs—all to the glory of our God!

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, help us to live out all of our daily activities with a mindset of service to You and a constant awareness of Your presence with us at all times. Help us to see all the things that we put our hands to, from the big to the small, as ways to bring you glory and honor. Amen.
