The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. - John 1:5
Step outside on a night where clouds hide the moon and stars, and you may find yourself standing in a kind of darkness where you cannot see your hand in front of your face—a darkness so black that it seems to swallow you whole! But, given the right circumstances, if I stood outside on that same night a mile away from you with a lit candle in my hand, amidst all that darkness your eye could still detect that tiny flame. A candle doesn’t have to overpower the darkness to be noticed. It simply has to shine.
Followers of Jesus carry His light with them wherever they go. The Bible tells us we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Our light was given to us by grace when we accepted Jesus as Savior. We became bearers of His light the moment we opened our hearts to Him.
We don’t have to try to illuminate the whole world overnight. Even when there is darkness around us, a small act of faith in the name of Christ stands out. Darkness never makes light harder to see—it makes light more visible. So don’t be afraid to shine your light, even in the midst of darkness. Someone may need to see the flame of hope you’re holding.

Father in heaven, Light of the world, thank you for entrusting me with Your light—a light that can never be extinguished. As I walk through my daily life, may Your light shine through me in all I say and do—to Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
