Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. - Matthew 7:24-25
Our house stands tall on the crest of a hill in northern Minnesota. So when a winter storm rolled in with 65-mile-an-hour winds, we felt every gust like a mighty sledgehammer. We watched our second story windows bow in and out as if they were made of plastic instead of glass. We watched our home decor quiver with each gale that pummeled the house. When nighttime fell, we struggled to sleep beneath creaking rafters, squealing metal siding and intermittent vibrations that resonated up through the mattress on our bed. It was unsettling to say the least. Yet, despite the relentless storm and raging wind, our house stood strong. Built years ago with a foundation on solid rock, it would not be moved.
Can we say the same of our faith? Have we anchored our trust to the only Rock that cannot be shaken through the storms of life? Jesus invites us to follow His teachings and build a life with Him that can withstand the winds of hardship and challenges that inevitably beat at our doorsteps. Today is a great time to stop and examine the footings of our faith. Let’s ask ourselves if faith is what motivates our actions, words, and life choices or is it simply a checklist item in our self descriptions. It’s not too late to tighten our tethers and walk closer with Him. Then, when the next squall hits, we will find ourselves secure in His care and never without the security of His shelter.
CLOSING PRAYER
Jesus, thank you for beckoning us to life in the grip of Your grace. Help us to live out our faith on a daily basis in everything we do, knowing that we stand solidly on the bedrock of Your Truth.
